Please join us next week for the Black Business Roundtable!

The NRBP 2020 Real Estate Market Forecast was the last major event NRBP held before moving to remote work due to COVID. This year's program will feature a market forecast by Richard Kasmin, Chief Economist at the NJEDA, and two panels highlighting opportunities that are emerging in the post COVID marketplace for commercial, residential and industrial development in Newark

While the challenges of COVID are many, this period has also been an opportunity to accelerate pace on some long planned projects. When many construction projects were shut down last spring, essential work was permitted to continue on some housing developments and progress for Gateway’s renovation accelerated with fewer office workers in the complex. With leadership from the City’s Department of Housing and Economic Development, first time and Newark based minority developers joined the mix to build projects through all of the wards and serving many income levels.

How can the City emerge poised for recovery? Join us to find out. This program will be held virtually.

Residential Real Estate and Development Panel

Historically, Black entrepreneurs have been systemically disadvantaged and face challenges around accessing capital, which in turn impacts the increasing wealth gap which exists between Black and white communities. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed this issue when the various loan and grant products were introduced and, in the same way the coronavirus disproportionately affected people of color overall, Black owned businesses found themselves disproportionately unable to access resources. An October 2020 report by SCORE noted that “prior to COVID-19, Black business growth was on the rise. Between 2012 and 2018, Black business owners saw their total annual revenue grow by 23.0% - twice as fast as overall employer-businesses in the U.S., and Black business owners added employees at double the rate of all other U.S. businesses, growing staff by 24.0% compared to 10.8% of all small businesses during the same time period. However, COVID-19 has significantly impacted Black business success, with only 8.8% reporting profitability and growth today.”

As we work to emerge successfully and profitably from the economic havoc caused by the pandemic, it will be particularly important to provide more capital to Black-owned businesses. To do this, we must know what Black-owned enterprises need, how different subsets within the group may want/need different forms of assistance, and how they feel they can be better served. What financial products are required or best suited? How can existing products be made more accessible?

Join us for this interactive conversation that will engage business owners, financiers, business development organizations, and YOU, the attendee!
