Mayor Cory Booker clearly established public safety as his highest priority and committed to ensuring that Newark becomes a nationwide model for police departments. One of his first steps towards that goal was the September 2006 hiring of Garry F. McCarthy as Newark’s police director.

A 25-year veteran of the New York Police Department, Director McCarthy has implemented structural and operational changes that are making the Newark Police Department more effective and efficient. Crumbling precincts are being repaired to improve working conditions, officers in clerical positions are back on the street, processing overhauls have reduced paperwork and the Comstat program has been revamped to focus on accountability. A new central narcotics division works in collaboration with the criminal gang intelligence unit and a quality of life initiative focuses on reducing crime and fear of crime. To broaden the impact, the Newark Police Foundation was created and is working to increase the department’s technological advancements.

At this forum, NRBP will hear from Mayor Booker and Police Director McCarthy about the City’s continuing high priority attention to reducing crime.
