Event Description:
At this Newark Insiders Forum, speakers will discuss the variety of redevelopment efforts underway, including a proposed Museum of African American Music (MoAAM), renovation of Symphony Hall, residential development, and renovation of the Dryden Mansion, now a center for non-profits, as well as Integrity, a drug and alcohol abuse treatment program that has maintained the park over the past 35 years.
Lincoln Park, one of Newark's three colonial parks, is named for President Lincoln, who once gave a speech on the steps of the (now abandoned) South Park Presbyterian Church. Originally called "South Commons," and later "South Park," what is now Lincoln Park was initially used as a watering place and grazing area for livestock. In the early 20th century, the Lincoln Park area was a neighborhood of nightclubs known as "The Coast". It was a center of jazz and a red light district or "tenderloin" formally called the Barbary Coast, The area is now home to the City Without Walls gallery (cWOW), Symphony Hall and the Theater Cafe (which has performances by the African Globe Theatre Works).
